George Town
Wednesday - August 16th 2023
Our one and only full day in George Town started with complimentary hotel
breakfast. We got coffee and croissants and toasts with cheese and eggs, which
were okay. After breakfast we headed out into the city and decided to just
walk to the Old Town of George Town. The Old Town is listed as a UNESCO World
Heritage Site because of all the gorgeous looking buildings and temples and we
really enjoyed strolling through the gorgeous streets and seeing picturesque
buildings like the Central Fire Station or the Queen Victoria Memorial Clock
Tower.

Next stop was Fort Cornwallis, an old fortification built by the British
East India to protect George Town. Exploring the fort with its lighthouse
was quite interesting, but since it was pretty hot and humid, we decided to
leave and find a Starbucks to cool down. Along the way we passed some
temples and were surprised by people burning stuff in the streets until we
learned that they did the burnings for good fortune. Unfortunately there was
no Starbucks around, but finally we found a lovely coffee house that served
waffles as well. We ordered a waffle with Nutella and ice cream and two iced
coffees.

Taking a Break |
After our much needed break we continued our walking tour, where we came
across more temples and the Kapitan Keling Mosque. Additionally we checked out
the many shops for souvenirs and in the early afternoon we decided to head
back to the hotel to spend some time relaxing at the pool. For our late lunch
we got sushi rolls which we ate in our room and then it would have been tim
for the pool, but unfortunately it started to rain and the hotel staff closed
the pool. Instaed we realxed in our room and then we got a beer at the
Japanese restaurant next door.

Drinks |
In the evening we went out for dinner to
Liliy's Vegetarian Kitchen. At first I was a little bit skeptical, because the restaurant didn't look
very inviting from the outside, but the food was so delicious. We got
dumpling soup, sommer rolls and fried noodles and enjoyed the meals a lot.
Afterwards we just strolled through the neighbourhood and stopped at
Hideaway 28 for
a couple of beers to bring the day to a close. Here in George Town we stayed
at the
Citadines Hotel, a wonderful boutique hotel with lovely and mordern rooms. Back at the
hotel we had two more drinks while we packed our luggage for tomorrow.
