California 2016 - Part 10

Driving To Los Angeles

Tuesday - May 31st 2016

After we checked out and had a coffee at Starbucks, we were on our way to Los Angeles again. We decided to take the coast highway instead of the interstate, because it offered a beautiful landscape. We stopped at one of the many beaches along the coast for pictures and around noon we arrived in Santa Monica. At first I wanted to visit the Will Rogers State Beach, that's where they filmed Baywatch, to see the famous lifeguards, but unfortunately the weather wasn't good and so the parking lot seemed to be closed. So we drove to Veggie Grill, a vegan fast food restaurant, instead and had lunch with burgers and fries.

Since we wanted to get more water and fruits for Disneyland, we were searching for a Whole Foods Market. We decided to drive to the one in Glendale, which was conveniently located, because I wanted so see the famous, at least for Disney fans, 1401 Flower Street. That's where Walt Disney Imagineering is located and dreams up all the fantastic attractions for Disney parks around the globe. On our way there we also had to stop at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, and I finally got to see the Seven Dwarfs building, also known as the Walt Disney Company's headquarter. After buying some stuff and getting dinner for later from Whole Foods' hot bar, we also visited the Glendale Galleria and The Americana at Brand. While the first one was just a regular shopping mall, the latter one was a bautiful outdoor shopping district. Afterwards we headed to Anaheim, but thanks to a major traffic jam, we arraived there later than expected.

Upon arrival we checked in into our motel, the Knights Inn Anaheim. At first we intended to stay at a Disney hotel, but the prices were just too high for us and so we gave the Knights Inn a try, which had a great deal for six nights. And were weren't disappointed. The room was really nice, since the motel got refurbished recently. There was also a pool, but we didn't use it. The fridge inside the room was also very convenient, because it allowed us to keep our fruits fresh and the water cold. So after we dropped our luggage in our room, we walked to Disneyland. That took about fifteen to twenty minutes, but we didn't mind the walk. At the ticket booth we redeemed our ticket vouchers and then we got a couple of cocktails at the fanatstic Trader Sam's at the Disneyland Hotel. What a cool and insane bar. The energy of the bartenders was incredible and the cocktails were delicious, but strong. Back at the hotel we ate our dinner from Whole Foods, had a good night's beer and then we went to bed.

California 2016 - Part 14

Los Angeles

Saturday - June 4th 2016

For today we had planned to visit the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles and to go to the Hollywood Boulevard. So after breakfast at Starbucks we were on our way. Traffic was light and soon we arrived in downtown. Luckily a car just left a parking spot in the shade near the concert hall and we also didn't have to pay, because there was still money in the parking meter. Downtown LA didn't offer that much, but at least the skyscrapers and Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall looked cool. After a snack at Subway we walked to the Civic Center and then we hit the road again towards Hollywood.

In Hollywood we had lunch at Veggie Grill and got some stuff at Trader Joe's. There we saw our first celebrity, unfortunately it was also our last. Former James Bond actor Timothy Dalton was in front of us at the cashier. Afterwards we drove to the Hollywood & Highland Center and before we headed to Hollywood Boulevard, we enjoyed a beer at the Hard Rock Cafe. The crowds on Hollywood Boulevard were crazy, but we got to see Disney's El Capitan Theatre, the TCL Chinese Theatre and the famous Dolby Theatre known from the Academy Awards. Since the crowds were too much for us and the Hollywood Boulevard itself was underwhelming, we decided to drive to the Griffith Observatory for the fantastic view over Los Angeles. Apparently more tourists had that idea and so we had to park quite away from the observatory. However, we didn't mind the walk and the view was definitely worth it.

We didn't spend too much time there and soon we drove back to Anaheim. Back at our hotel we refreshed and then it was time for dinner. So we headed to the Anaheim Gardenwalk shopping mall to eat at P.F. Chang's. The shopping mall itself was quite depressing, since many shops were closed, but dinner was very good. We spent the rest of the evening in front of the TV watching the Food Network.
