San Juan - Puerto Rico
Wednesday - January 21st 2015
We got up pretty early today, because in the early morning we arrived in
San Juan, Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States, but doesn't have full statehood, although Puerto Ricans are US citizens. So after we woke up, we watched the docking from our verandah and then we had breakfast at Cabanas.

I guess Claudia and I were among the first guests to leave the ship, but
we wanted to see as much as possible of
San Juan. First we walked through the Old
Town with its lovely Spanish buildings, but since it was still early in
the morning, all the shops were closed. So we decided to see the
Fort San Felipe del Morro first and that was a good decision, because when we
left the Fort, busloads of people arrived, while we had the fortress nearly for our own to explore. It was very interesting, especially its history
beginning with the first Spanish settlements. We also went to the cemetery of Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzi, which was located near the fortress.

Afterwards we walked back into the Old Town and strolled through the
shops, but since most of them were about jewelry, we didn't buy anything,
except for a scarf and some Caribbean spices. Around noon we had lunch at
Cafe Berlin, a restaurant that also offered a vegetarian menu. I had a
sandwich with fries and Claudia ordered a local dish called Mofongo,
which was delicious.

Since it was getting really warm, we got an iced coffee at Starbucks and
after a while we returned to the ship. It was just too hot to be in the city. Back on the ship we took a shower and
watched Disney's Big Hero 6, a wonderful animated movie, at the Buena
Vista Theatre. Right before the ship departed San Juan, we headed to the
sundeck and watched the island disappearing on the horizon. At the
Currents bar we met a very friendly gay couple from Germany and the US
and chatted with them until it was time for dinner. We skipped today's
show with an illusionist, because talking to them was so much more
interesting than seeing another magic show one can find nearly everywhere.

Dinner was at Animator's Palate and we had salad for starter, tofu steak
for the main course and ice cream again for dessert. The highlight of
the dinner were our hand drawn figures that appeared on the video
screens in the restaurants. At the Bon Voyage Bar we met our favourite
barkeeper and spent the rest of the evening talking to him.
