Winchester Mystery House
Monday - May 30th 2016
Today it was time to leave San Francisco towards Los Angeles. On our way there
we had to stop at the
Winchester Mystery House
in San Jose. A few years ago when we studied in the US my wife and I saw a
Halloween TV special about haunted houses and one of those houses was the
Winchester Mystery House. Since then we wanted to see it and this year we
finally did. The backstory of the haunted house is rather strange. Sarah
Winchester, the wealthy widow of the founder of the Winchester Riffle Company,
was told by spirits that she had to build a house until she died, because
otherwise the souls of the victims of the Winchester riffles would come and
haunt her. So for all her life she continued to build that house. To be safe
from the spirits, the house was constructed like a labyrinth to confuse the
ghosts, and so there are stairs leading to nowhere or rooms without windows.
We arrived there in the early morning to do the first tour. It was really
cool, but strange as well.

After we purchased some souvenirs, we continued our journey towards LA. First
we drove to Monterey, where got coffe, and from there we chose to take US
Highway 1 along the coast. Every travel guide recommends that road and so we
had to do that to. What a mistake! While the views and landscapes were
beautiful, driving there was not so much. Basically it was a traffic jam from
Monterey to Santa Maria. Maybe that was due to the Memorial Day holiday, but
it was just terrible. Nonetheless we made the best out of it and enjoyed the
scenery. Finally in the evening we arrived in Santa Maria at our hotel. There
we stayed at the
Holyday Inn
for one night. Unfortunately we got a dirty room and so we had to switch
rooms. The new one was fine and so we headed to Taco Bell for dinner. The food
was okay, nothing special, but the restaurant was just around the corner and
we didn't want drive around anymore. After another drink at the hotel bar, we
returned to our room.
