Madeira 2023 - Part 5

Levada Tour

Tuesday - May 9th 2023

Today it was time for one of our most anticipated tours. After breakfast we were picked up by the bus and once we collected all other guests, we drove to the North part of the island from whrere our Levada hiking tour started. First our guide explained what to expect from the day and then we started our crossing of Madeira from North to South through the mountains along the many Levadas that runs through the island. A Levada is a small canal built between the 16th and 20th century to bring water from the North to the South of Madeira. Our guide was great and provided our group with lots of information about the canals. We weren't the only tour that day and so sometimes it got very crowded along the way, but that didn't distract from the beautiful landscape.

Around noon we arrived at a beautiful waterfall, where we took a lunch break and ate our snacks we brought along for the tour. Afterwards we continued our hike towards the Southe of Madeira. Soon we reached a tunnel that was digged through the mountain to get the Levada to the other side. It was a little bit spooky to walk through the pitch black tunnel, but a lot of fun as well. Then we had to walk for another hour until we reached the end point of our hiking tour. After a short stop in a little village by the sea the bus took us back to the hotel, where we spent the rest of the afternoon at the pool until it was time for another delicious dinner.
