New York City 2008 - Part 1

Arriving In Manhattan

Due to the time difference between Las Vegas and the east coast, we arrived in New York City in the evening. After we picked up our luggage, a taxi brought us from JFK airport to our hotel. New York isn't the cheapest city, but we found a very nice hotel, called Herald Square Hotel, in Manhattan. The rooms were really small and with all our luggage we hardly could move in our room, but it featured a bathroom, a TV and free internet. The hotel is very proud of their matresses and we have to say, that we slept well. Since it was already late, we just walked around Fifth Avenue and had dinner at Burger King.

Time to explore Manhattan. After s small breakfast in our hotel,  just coffee and cookies, we were on our way to Times Square. Since the weather was really nice, we decided to do the Empire State Building first. The building was just two blocks away and it would be the perfect start for our New York City trip. The line wasn't very long and soon we were on top of the building, from where you have a fantastic view over Manhattan.

Before we walked to Times Square, we paid a visit to the Grand Central Station and other New York City landmarks, like the Met Life Building. Finally we made it to Times Square, which was smaller than imagined, nevertheless all the illuminated advertising boards were amazing. Afterwards my Claudia and I went to Columbus Circle and visited the Time Warner Center, where we had a coffee and relaxed a bit.

It was already early afternoon and so we had a pretzel and enjoyed the sun in Central Park. Unfortunately my girlfriend didn't feel good, we decided to walk back to the hotel, but before we stopped at the World of Disney Store and bought a NYC pin.

New York City 2008 - Part 2

Alone In New York City

Wednesday - January 9th 2008

Claudia still didn't feel better, in fact she felt worse, so she stayed in bed for the whole day. Meanwhile I walked on my own through Manhattan. First I went back to Times Square, where I made more pictures, then to Rockefeller Center followed by the Sony Building. There I had a coffee and tried some products in the Sony Store. Before I went back to the hotel, I stopped at the Disney Store again.

New York City 2008 - Part 3

The Statue Of Liberty

Thursday - January 10th 2008

Today my girlfriend felt better again and so we decided to go to the Statue of Liberty. After a coffee for breakfast we walked to the Flat Iron Building and then we took the subway to Downtown Manhattan from where the ferries to Liberty Island depart.

Staten Island Ferry

After we arrived at Battery Park, we bought the tickets for the ferry to Liberty Island. Unfortunately we had to wait a bit for our tour and so we enjoyed a donut and a cup of coffee in the sun while watching at the sea. Finally it was time for our tour. Before we could board the ferry, we were searched by Port Authority Officers like at airports. After a small boat ride we arrived at the island. From the ferry you have stunning view on Manhattan.

Since it wasn't possible anymore to go inside the statue, we just walked around the island and made some photos. We also visited the tourist center, where you can get some informations about the construction.

Our tour included Ellis Island as well, but we skipped it and returned to Manhattan for a late lunch instead. Afterwards we just walked around Downtown Manhattan. We visited Castle Clinton, Ground Zero, the Wall Street with the New York Stock Exchange and Trinity Church. Later we returned to our hotel.

New York City 2008 - Part 4

On The Gray Line Double Decker Tour

Friday - January 11th 2008

On our last day in New York City we wanted to see as much as possible and the best way to do that, is to go on a Hop on Hop off Tour. We chose the Downtown Loop and after we had our tickets, we joined the bus tour at Times Square.

The Downtown Loop included:

Times Square, Broadway, Macy's, Madison Square Garden, Empire State Building, Flat Iron Building, Greenwich Village, Soho, Chinatown, City Hall, Brooklyn Bridge, World Trade Center Site, Battery Park, Lower East Side, East Village, United Nations, Waldorf Astoria, Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall and Central Park.

Our tour guide was so great that we did the tour with him twice in a row. Another reason was that it was raining heavily and we didn't want to get off.

During our second round the weather got better and so we got off the bus at the United Nations. When we arrived there a tour through the building was about to start and we joined. I can really recommend to do it, because it is very interesting and you get to see the Assembly Hall and the World Security Council. Besides that the guides give you informations about UN missions and other work done by the blue helmets. Since we are from Austria the tour guide was proud to tell us that an Austrian was Secretary General of the United Nations some years ago.

After the United Nations we joined the bus tour again, and yes we did a third round, because now the sun was shinning and so we could sit on the upper deck.

We got off at Times Square and since it was already evening we bought some Falaffel and fries on our way back to the hotel. I bought some beers and we enjoyed a quite evening in front of the TV. On the next day we were picked up by an airport shuttle and flew from JFK to Orlando, Florida.
