London 2023/24 - Part 1

Travel Day

Friday - December 29th 2023

It was that time of the year again and we were about to travel to London over New Year's Eve. Our British Airways flight departed from Salzburg around noon and since we still had plenty of time until boarding we got a glass of beer. The flight to London was uneventful, but we enjoyed a couple of drinks. In the afternoon we landed at London Gatwick Airport and once we collected our luggage, we took the Gatwick Express to London Victoria Station. There we stopped at a Nando's restaurant for dinner before taking the next train to Wandsworth Town. This time we stayed the The Alma, a small hotel with just a couple of rooms right next to our favourite pub. After we ckecked in and unpacked our luggage, we headed straight to The Alma pub where we spent the rest of the evening. Before returning to our room we checked out the nearby MS store and got some snacks and water.

London 2023/24 - Part 2

Battersea

Saturday - December 30th 2023

Our first full day in London started with breakfast at Lockdown Bakehouse near our hotel, where we got coffee and croissants. For today we planned to walk from Wandsworth Town to Battersea Power Station, which takes about an hour. With the coffees in our hands we walked along the River Thames towards Battersea. We did the same tour last year already and although the weather wasn't the best, we still enjoyed the long walk again.

At Battersea Power Station we had a reservation for Lift 109, a great observation deck in one of the power plant's funels. Lift 109 is also a small museum about Battersea and its history. Once we were allowed into the museum, we had a couple of minutes to explore the exhibition until it was time to board the lift that takes you inside the funel to the top. From there we had a wonderful view over London and Battersea. Afterwards we had lunch at Clean Kitchen, where we ordered a plant based burger and a wrap with fries. Like last year the food was really good. Our next stop was at Control Room B, a beautiful bar in one of the power plant's old control rooms. There we had a couple of drinks before checking out some of the shops.

In the afternoon we continued our walking tour towards the inner city. Along the way we passed the US embassy, the Covid memorial wall, the London Eye and ended at the Blackfriars Pub. There we got a couple of drinks before heading back to Wandsworth Town. We spent the rest of the evening at The Alma pub enjoying some beers and gin tonics. For dinner we got sandwiches and salads at MS and had an in room picnic while watching TV.
