Japan 2025 - Part 8

Fushimi Inari-Taisha

Saturday - October 11th 2025

After coffee at Starbucks we took the train to Fushimi Inari-Taisha. We had already been there in 2018, but back then we didn't make it to the top and so we gave it another try. When we arrived the temple was packed with people and so we headed straight to the path that leads to the top of the small mountain. Luckily the further we walked from the temple it got less crowded. The beautiful walk through the many red coloured gates around the hill took about an hour and on the way back to the temple we came across a shop that sold lucky charms in the form of ceramic foxes. We bought some for our families and then we took the train back to Kyoto.

On the Way back to Kyoto

Back in Kyoto we visited Nijo-Jo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its beautiful surrounding gardens before heading back to our hotel. Along the way we stopped at a boulangerie to get some snacks and rolls for a late lunch. The rest of the afternoon we used to relax and to wash some clothes at the hotel laundry. In the evening we had booked a show about the Japanese arts and culture at the Gion Corner Theatre. Claudia and I were even part of the performance, because we bought special seats that included tea and sweets. What we didn't know, that we got our teas from the actors as part of the traditional tea ceremony performance. Although the show was clearly intended for international tourists, we really liked it, since it gave a wonderful insight into the lang lasting Japanese culture. Afterwards we had dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe, since all other restaurants in the area were packed and we didn't want to wait for a table any longer. Back at the hotel we enjoyed a couple of drinks at the hotel bar before calling it a day.
