Exploring Doha
Tuesday - November 12th 2024
Today we had planned to visit Doha's city centre with its traditional Souq
Waqif, but before heading into the city, we had breakfast. Afterwards we took
the metro to
Souq Waqif. Taking the subway was very convenient, since we a station right next to the
hotel and we didn't have to worry about finding a parking space in the inner
city. The subway was very nice and modern and it took us about half an hour to
step foot into the souq. First we just strolled through the narrow streets and
then we checked out the many little stores. The souq offered not only spices,
but also clothes and other things like furnitures or souvenirs. There were
also many cafes and restaurants or shisha bars.

In the late morning we left the souq and walked towards
Msheireb Downtown Doha, a planned smart city and the world's first sustainable downtown. The area
was very modern and even featured an automated tram line, that was more of a
tourist attraction than a real working public transport system. We also took
a ride on the tram to see what Msheireb Downtown had to offer. Although the
area was really beautiful, it felt like a ghost town, since there was no
one, even the shops and most restaurants or cafes were empty. So we just
walked around Msheireb to check out to modern architecture. At a nearby
supermarket we got some cheese croissants for lunch and then we took the
metro to the National Museum of Qatar.

When we arrived at the Qatar National Museum, we tried to find something to
eat, but unfortunately the whole area didn't offer a lot. Since we were more
interested in the amazing architecture of the building than of the museum
itself, we didn't go inside. The musem looked really stunning and after
taking some pictures in the Doha heat, we decided to take the metro back to
the hotel. Along the way we stopped at
Greenandgo for
bagels and smoothies. Back at the hotel we relaxed a bit in the room until
it was time to head out again.

In the evening we drove to
Aspire Zone, a huge sports complex that was used for the FIFA World Cup in 2022.
Unfortunately there wasn't that much to see, since we were at the wrong
entrance. So we parked our car at the nearby
Villaggio Shopping Mall. There we got a coffee at Starbucks and strolled throughthe mall checking
out all the different shops. Although the mall felt older, it still looked
quite nice with its Italian theming. For dinner we went to
The Cheesecake Factory
inside the mall. Claudia got quaesadilas while I ordered the pizza flat
bread. The food was very good and of course we had to try their classic
cheesecake as well, which tasted amazing. On the way back to the hotel we
stopped at Al Corniche to see the beautifully illuminated skyline of Doha
West Bay. Before heading to the room, we enjoyed a glass of beer at the
outdoor hotel bar.
