Alpe Adria Bike Trail 2020 - Part 3

Alpe Adria Bike Trail

Monday - August 17th 2020

After breakfast we hit the road again and stopped at the local supermarket to buy some stuff for lunch. Today's tour was divided into two parts. The first stage, which was about 5km, took us from our hotel in Bad Gastein to the train station in Böckstein, from where we had to catch the train to Mallnitz in Carinthia. The second part took us from Mallnitz to Spaittal an der Drau. But first we had to make sure to catch the train from Böckstein at 10:20am. Although it was just a short distance from the hotel to the train station, the ascend was quite steep. However we arrived on time, bought our tickets and after a short wait time we were allowed to board the train. The so called ÖBB Tauern Motorail connects the Gastein Valley in Salzburg with the Möll Valley in Carinthia and is the only way to get to the other side, because the road ended at the end of the valley.

It took us about 11 minutes to cross the Alps through the Tauern Tunnel. Once on the other side, we checked what route to take, because there were two possibilities. The first one was along the main road down the valley, but we wanted to take the other one along an old railway line. Unfortunately the bike guide mentioned that it might be closed in 2020 due to construction work. All other bikers on the train took the main road, but we decided to give it a try. We were lucky and the trail was still open and basically we had the beautiful route to ourselves. At the end of the old railway line was an abondoned train station, where we had a short break.

After our short break we continued our tour, but just a few kilometers later in Obervellach we stopped again, because we needed coffee. Once we were on the road again it looked like the weather would change, but luckily it didn't start to rain. Around noon we got hungry and after we found a lovely place for a break, we ate our lunch snacks. Afterwards the trail followed the river Möll for about 20km towards the small village of Möllbrücke, where we stopped for a refreshing beer. Unfortunatey the rest of the day got a bit stressfull, because a thunderstorm was approaching and I had to cope with a flat tire. Once I changed the tire Claudia and I had to hurry to escape the rain. We couldn't really enjoy the remaining kilometers to Spittal, but we made it dry to our hotel.

We arrived in Spittal an der Drau in the late afternoon and once we found our hotel it started to rain heavily. In Spittal we stayed at Erlebnishotel Post, which was a bit on the pricey side, but our room was nice and comfortable. After we showered we headed out into the town to find a restaurant for dinner. Our choice fell on Juicy Lucy, a modern looking restaurant that offered some vegan options as well. Claudia ordered a veggie pizza and I got a pita breaf filled with veggies and tofu. We were not disppointed with our choice, because the food tasted really great. A delicious meal and two cocktails later we just strolled around town until we returned to the hotel, whre we spent the rest of the rainy evening in front of the TV.
