Ireland 2005 - Part 1

Ireland

Ireland has always been a dream destination for us. The best way to explore the green island is to rent a holiday home and start your excursions from there. Since such holiday homes have enough space to acommodate up to five people, we decided to ask our friends to join us. This was a good chance to spend some time together, because everyone was moving somewhere else due to college.

After we found the perfect apartment house, it was time to find a flight to Ireland. Our first choice was Ryan Air, because back then it was still cheap. Nevertheless luggage was limited and so we had some troubles to pack everything accordingly. Before our flight arrived in Cork in the late afternoon, we had to stop in London Stansted, rush trough the airport, grab the luggage, rush to the next Ryan Air counter and check in again. Booking through wasn't possible and we only had two hours in London, you can imagine that this was very stressful. Since then we have never used this cheap carrier again. After we got our luggage, we took a taxi to our hostel. I don't remember the name, but we weren't that happy with it. Luckily we had only two nights there. We got our rooms and then we had some drinks with our friends at the nearest pub.

In the morning we had breakfast at a nice coffee house at the English Market. That's the right way to start your day. In 2005 Cork was the European Capital of Culture and so the city was nicely decorated with banners and flaggs. Since we hadn't planned anything for Cork, we just strolled around the city. Cork isn't that big and so we had only planned one day there.

First we walked to the Saint Finbarre's Cathedral and then to the University College Cork. Next we walked over the Strawberry Hill back to the city to get some coffee to warm up again, because the weather wasn't that good.

We spent the rest of the day with sightseeing in the city. In the evening we had dinner at a Chinese restaurant. Afterwards we had some Guinness Beers in several pubs. To be honest I'm not the biggest fan of dark beer, but one glass is really good.
