Mailberg 2021 - Part 1

Austria is home to a couple of fantastic wine regions and this weekend Claudia and I were about to visit the so called Weinviertel in Lower Austria. Friday after work we were on our way and four hours later we arrived in Mailberg, where we stayed at Hotel Castle Mailberg. We booked a Standard Room, which was fine, but nothing special. After we checked in, we hit the road again to get dinner at restaurant Hanfwirt. The restaurant was recommended to us because there they offered some vegan options. A delicious vegan dinner later we drove back to our hotel.

Back at the hotel we decided to walk down into the village to get a glass of wine at a local wine bar. After a short walk through the village we decided to stop at Wine Bar Hagn. To our surprise the bar was quite full, but we found a nice place in the outside lounge. After two glasses of wine we headed back to the hotel.

Saturday - July 10th 2021

 

Today we slept in and after breakfast we were on our way to Therme Laa, a hot springs pool and spa facility. On the way we stopped at a small grocery store to get some snacks and drinks. Once we arrived and after we changed into our swimm clothes we headed straight to the outdoor area to get our sun chairs. Then it was finally time to jump into the water. Around noon the beach bar opened its gates and of course we had to get a couple of drinks. For lunch we went to the restaurant and had fries. In the afternoon we returned to our hotel and relaxed a bit.

The reason why we visited the Weinviertel region was a wine tasting event held by vegan wine producer Fürnkranz. The shuttle service picked us up around 5pm and just a couple of minutes later we arrived at the wine yards. There we were greeted with a glass of wine and some vegan goodies to try. Once all guests arrived we got a tour through the wine yards and the former production facilities. After the tour was over the vegan buffet was officially open. Additionally we could drink as many glasses of wine as we wanted. The food was really good and needless to say we ate a lot and enjoyed the sun going down in the wineyards. Around 10pm the shuttle took us back to our hotel.

Sunday - July 11th 2021

Today after breakfast we drove back to Salzburg, but along the way we stopped in St. Florian at Restaurant Stiftskeller for lunch. In the early afternoon we finally arrived back home in Salzburg.
